Enoshima’s origin is said to date back to the 13th year of Emperor Kinmei (552), when sand began to rise from the sea floor over 21 days, forming an island. A legendary tale records that a five-headed dragon once terrorized the region, bringing floods and calamity. One day, a celestial maiden appeared, and the dragon, falling in love, vowed to reform and protect the people. Eventually, the island was formed, and the dragon became a guardian deity, associated with Benzaiten.Enoshima Shrine
Founded in 552, it enshrines Benzaiten, goddess of wealth and music. Highlights include the wooden Eight-Armed Benzaiten statue, Fujihara Masahiro’s sword, bronze torii gate, and the “Money-Washing White Dragon King,” where washing coins is said to bring prosperity.
